Ready to start shopping for engagement rings? Here’s what you need to know before you buy your engagement ring.
So you have decided to pop the question. Congratulations! The next step in your journey is obviously to start to shop for your engagement ring to make it official. If you are like most people, you may not have a ton of knowledge about diamond, rings and settings. Take a look these things to consider before you buy an engagement ring in Austin.
#1. Beware of “wholesale” claims
Let’s face it: engagement rings can be expensive. Outside of a car or home, an engagement ring can be one of the most expensive purchases you make, and one of the most important! After all, you are choosing to spend the rest of your life with someone so you want any ring you choose to be the best you can get for your budget.
If you have already started to search online, chances are you have seen jewelry stores offering steep discounts or “wholesale” prices. But buying an engagement ring is not like shopping at Costco, right? Are you really getting a “wholesale” diamond ring? The answer is no. The truth is no one is buying large quantities of diamonds from cutters and transacting directly with the end consumer in bulk.
Jewelers who offer “wholesale” prices are likely using misleading advertising prices and may even be breaking the law. According to the Code of Federal Regulations, title 16, chapter 1, subchapter B, section 233.5; “retailers should not advertise a retail price as a “wholesale” price. They should not represent that they are selling at “factory” prices when they are not selling at the prices paid by those purchasing directly from the manufacturer.” The Jewelers Vigilance Committee (JVC) had also mentioned that vendors who claim to offer wholesale prices to the public violate both the Lanham Act and FTC guidelines.
Jewelers who claim to be “diamond wholesalers” are actually selling to end consumers as retailers. If you think you are getting an awesome deal from a diamond store offering “wholesale” engagement ring prices you better think again.
#2. Know your budget and stick to it
One of the many reasons people will drive all over town when shopping for an engagement ring is to find one within their budget. Who has time for that? Not to mention when you walk into a jewelry store you are met with high-pressure sales tactics and bait and switch pricing. No wonder buying and engagement ring can be a daunting process!
Before you begin shopping make sure you know the maximum amount you can afford for your engagement ring. Despite what most jewelry sales people will tell you, it is entirely possible to find a gorgeous engagement ring for as little as $500. What’s more important than the amount you spend is what the ring represents to you and your partner. So don’t let anyone pressure you into buying a ring outside of your budget or make you feel like you should be buying a larger, more expensive ring.
